TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
Who Should Attend
Current & Aspiring Principals, Assistant Principals, Directors of Instruction, Lead Teachers, and Teachers
English as a Second Language (ESL) students often need assistance in accessing language content to meet content specific performance objectives. This course will show participants ways in which to scaffold literacy and vocabulary development strategies specifically for the ESL population. The class will draw heavily on Dr. Robert Marzano’s research on nine highly effective teaching strategies, overall, and on how these classroom instructional strategies can be modified for ESL students. The course will also discuss vocabulary development strategies developed by Dr. Harvey Silver and, as the course will be conducted in English, the activities in which teachers engage will model many of the ESL strategies that participating teachers can then use with their students.
To provide various models that promote project based learning activities.
