Mapping the Most Strategic Road to CCSS
Grade-by-Grade and Year-by-Year

A Workshop for Site/District Leadership Teams

The Common Core Standards are coming! Many educators look forward to this change; however jumping to use the new standards may undo current Program Improvement work and inadvertently have a negative impact on student achievement. This workshop provides site or district leadership teams with a clear map of the possible pathways from California’s 1997 ELA Standards to the 2010 California Common Core Content Standards for English Language Arts.  If you are eager to get started using the Common Core Standards, but uncertain about best how to proceed, be sure to send your team.

Teams attending will actively engage with a Learning Progression Chart that:

  • Depicts the student’s view of the ELA path and targets from Pre-kindergarten through Grade 12
  • Displays all CST, CMA, CAPA, HSEE, EAP/EPT testing Blueprint information in an easy-to-analyze format
  • Relates the 1997 ELA Standards to the associated ELD Standards
  • Matches the 1997 ELA Standards to the ‘most-related’ 2010 California Common Core for English Language Arts

Teams in attendance will also learn how several schools and districts successfully used the Learning Progression Chart to positively impact student achievement. The journey includes several highly structured processes that align to the key elements described in the Academic Program Survey while using the key concepts from Professional Learning Communities.  The unique display found in the Learning Progression Chart allows for easy analyses for a variety of purposes; strategic planning at the student, classroom, grade or department, school, and district levels; and communicating coherence to stakeholders. See how the Learning Progression Chart is used to:

  • Identify or refine ‘essential’ standards for English Language Arts so that there is alignment within and across grade levels…and consider how to best support  the transition to the Common Core
  • Create ‘core’ curriculum pacing guides that communicate when and where these standards are taught and therefore when best to assess …and consider how to best support  the transition to the Common Core
  • Generate or critique the assessment  system in support of student learning of ‘essential’ standards in ‘core’ programs…and consider how to best support  the transition to the Common Core
Leadership Teams can leave this workshop knowing how best to capture teachers’ curiosity without undoing full implementation of core programs or local assessment initiatives; how to continue aiming for API/ AYP targets in the current CST climate  while strategically planning NOW for program adjustments to support student performance for new assessments in 2014-2015.

Who Should Attend?

Leadership teams comprised of teachers and administrators. Elementary K-6, and English Departments at the middle school and high school levels.

About the Presenter

Kathy Clements has well over twenty years in education serving in diverse roles: classroom teacher, Title 1 Reading teacher, county office consultant, university adjunct professor. She has served on various committees and boards. Her passion and focus has always been improving literacy achievement for all. Kathy has most recently centered her focus on using the key concepts of Professional Learning Communities to support School and/or District Leadership Teams to continue to pursue, refine, and align school practices to the Essential Program Components as communicated in California’s Academic Program Survey. She recently developed and successfully implemented a series of workshops for Leadership Teams that resulted in increased student achievement for attending schools and districts. Kathy finds the adoption of the 2010 Common Core State Standards to be the just-right-event to cause educators to re-examine our current practices while preparing our classrooms for the future standards.
