Glen Thomas, Ed.D. – Senior Advisor for Regional Support Services Dr. Glen W. Thomas has served as the Executive Director to the State Curriculum Commission where he became known as a progressive curriculum leader. He also served as Assistant Superintendent in the California State Department of Education. In 1996, Dr. Thomas staffed the Reading and Mathematics Task Forces and helped lead the development of academic content standards and new initiatives in statewide professional development. Dr. Thomas was appointed by the governor to the Academic Standards Commission and to serve on the High School Exit Exam (HSEE) Committee that developed the exam. Dr. Thomas has also served as the State Director of Education Technology. Recently, Dr. Thomas served as Executive Director for the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA). Dr. Thomas was instrumental in obtaining a $17 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which led to the training of 11,000 statewide principals and vice-principals on key components of curriculum and instruction, personnel management, and leadership. An advocate of arts education, Dr. Thomas helped secure a Hewlett Foundation grant to promote the visual and performing arts, and he also worked in creating a statewide infrastructure for the arts through the county offices of education. Dr. Thomas also staffed a statewide task force on the arts (co-chaired by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Secretary of Education). The 2002 recipient of the California Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (CASCD) Helen Heffernan Award for statewide leadership in curriculum and instruction, Dr. Thomas served on the California State University System President’s Task Force for Education Leadership, which developed improvement recommendations for the schools of education of all California State University campuses. He also served on the University of California President’s Strategic Review Panel on Educational Outreach. Dr. Thomas is a founding member of the Board of Advisors to the School of Education at the University of California, Davis, and he is a state board member of the California Alliance for Arts Education. Dr. Thomas occasionally teaches Education Policy and Leadership at California State University, Sacramento and at the University of Southern California. Dr. Thomas earned his Ed.D. in curriculum policy and leadership from the University of Southern California.
